1st January 2011

New years day, and no sore head...... fantastic...
A good friend and I headed over to Waggoners Wells for a walk, it was a mucky day, grey and damp but not cold. It is a long time since I have been to the ponds here, and had forgotten just how blue they are. They are thought to have been dug a tthe end of the 17 th century to service the iron industry but appear never to have been used.
The combination of beech leaves and the blue water is striking and reminds me of works by Japanese artists such as Hiroshige.
In places the ponds are still frozen over, it must have been stunning in the snow last week.

In places the tangled tree roots are exposed as the sandy soil has eroded.
many types of lichen grow on the trees, in the centre back of this image is a tree covered in Lime green lichen, it looks particularly fresh after the snow. I want to find out quite why these ponds are this blue nothing on the NT website.
